About Us

Los Angeles is home to more than 10 million people. Its public education system is one of the region’s most critical services; its schools are places of academic achievement, social and emotional growth, nourishment, and joy for more than one million students.

During the 2024-2025 school year, 235 corps members touched the lives of 16,500 students in 91 traditional public and public charter schools in South, East, Central, and North LA, including Los Angeles, Inglewood, and Lynwood Unified School Districts.

No story about Teach For America is complete without Los Angeles. We are one of the first five Teach For America sites, founded in 1990. We support the third-largest alumni network with over 4,000 TFA alumni living in Los Angeles.

Living & Teaching in Los Angeles

Los Angeles County is home to approximately 10 million people spread out across 4,060 square miles of palm trees, mountains, beaches, and sunshine. Our corps members are spread throughout the region and teach in several school districts, including Los Angeles and Inglewood Unified School Districts, as well as many charter management organizations serving the region’s highest-need students. While our teachers span the breadth of the city from Pacoima to Carson, the majority of our corps members work in our focus communities in South and Southeast LA.

Why These Students Love Their Teachers

Connecticut

In less than a decade we've helped bring about significant changes for our students and communities, despite deep levels of income disparities in the state.

About Us

Our program is centered around our vibrant urban centers in Connecticut: Hartford, New Haven, and Bridgeport. Our City Teams foster partnerships with leaders and organizations in their cities to build coalitions. They are working in partnership with students, families, educators, and community leaders to develop a contextualized vision for student success. The result? Deeper relationships, community  centered, stronger networks, and greater impact.

Our network extends beyond city limits as more than 800 alumni are contributing to long-term leadership in classrooms, in school and district leadership, in nonprofits, civic leadership, and across sectors to influence positive progress toward our state’s promise an excellent education for all kids.

A growing number of examples prove that when students’ needs are supported, when they are held to high expectations, and when their leadership is recognized, all students have the potential to succeed. Alongside our school communities and in partnership with champions across the state, we are working to ensure that these examples are no longer the exception, but the rule.

Living Here

Connecticut might be only 170 miles long, but it's packed with charming towns, scenic country roads, and vibrant urban centers. Whether it's enjoying the dynamic food and culture in our capitol city of Hartford, some of the best pizza in the country in New Haven, or spending summer days along the shoreline you will always find plenty of activities. In fact, your students and their families will give you the best highlights of all. From the best soul food and Caribbean food in Bridgeport to the International Festival of Arts and Ideas on the New Haven Green near Yale University, or the incredible farm-to-table coffee spots in Hartford, you'll discover all the gems within our urban centers. Connecticut is also full of lakes, hiking trails, vineyards, beaches, and year-round activities. A quick hike along the Appalachian Trail or a weekend of paddle-boarding is only a short walk or drive away. No matter where you reside, you’ll be part of a tight-knit, welcoming, and adventurous community.

“TFA has had an incredible impact on my life. It showed me that I have a role to play in making changes in the education system. I continue to teach because I believe in my students and love my city for all its history, flaws, beauty, and people. Change is rooted in communities. As educators, we will play a lot of roles in students’ lives, including helping students find their voice and be ready to function in the world, and in their families.”

Alumni Leadership

Transforming education requires a broad coalition of people united around shared values and purpose, and our focus is on leveraging networks to pursue and achieve systems-level change. We do this by developing, supporting, and tracking the degree to which our alumni are making purposeful change in the area; engaging with and initiating programs or policies locally; and connecting with each other, our community, and our network to achieve maximum impact.

About Us

We are committed to working towards educational excellence for every child in Alabama.

Firmly believing in the power of increased educational opportunity, four Black Belt community members sat down at Mustang Oil, a diner in rural Alabama, and decided to work to bring Teach For America to the state of Alabama. Despite many obstacles, they secured everything necessary to guarantee 30 teachers a place to work in Alabama’s Black Belt beginning in 2010. Since then, the Alabama region has rapidly expanded across the Black Belt and in some of our largest urban areas.

Our alumni base in Alabama is rapidly growing, with over 300 alumni living and working in Alabama, taking on major policy roles, becoming principals, and bringing AP classes, ACT prep, and college-level work to their schools. While we are far from finished in our fight for educational excellence in Alabama, we have maintained the grassroots spirit that first brought us here, and we are committed to our mission.

“I spent three years teaching in rural Alabama and fell in love with my students and their home. That experience and love brought me back to Alabama. Coming back, I knew I’d have so much support from the Bamaly and could have an even bigger impact here. That solidified my move back from across the country.”

Living Here

The story of Alabama is one of triumph. For our corps members, living in Alabama means honoring the history of the work that has happened here, while continuing to work towards educational excellence every day. Alabama is quickly being known for our vibrant art and film community, a thriving food and restaurant scene, and quickly growing entrepreneurial opportunities. Our members have found opportunities to build relationships with elected officials, community leaders, community members, families, and students in a way that might not be as easily accessible in other places in the nation. We have found that our members quickly grow and expand their networks by working side-by-side with local communities.

Our members also find opportunities for rest and relaxation by taking advantage of multiple sporting events all year long through professional and collegiate baseball, football, soccer, basketball, and gymnastics. They have also found opportunities to explore our state’s beautiful hiking trails, mountains, rivers, and campsites. Our state has multiple art and music festivals throughout the year and has been honored as one of the nation's fastest growing, high quality food scenes in the nation.

Our members mostly live in Birmingham, Marion, Tuscaloosa, Selma, and Montgomery and they teach in Birmingham, Greensboro, Marion, and Selma. These locations are centrally located and make trips around the state, Atlanta, Nashville, and New Orleans can all be quick weekend trips.
