Apple and Teach for America Launch Coding, App Design Clubs Across the Country

Student finalists will compete for the top app award at a national showcase on Wednesday.

NEW YORK, May 20, 2025 Apple and Teach for America (TFA) have teamed up to launch new coding and app design clubs in close to 90 elementary, middle, and high schools across 27 states and the District of Columbia. The clubs give nearly 60,000 students across the country the opportunity to learn new digital skills that open doors to the jobs of the future, strengthen their critical thinking and problem solving, and practice teamwork and public speaking.

As part of this year’s pilot program, Apple donated new iPads to support participating students at each club, and TFA has created custom training materials that utilize Apple’s Everyone Can Code resources. The program is now supporting coding and app development programs in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Washington, DC, and Wisconsin.

"At Apple, we have always believed in the power of education to create opportunity—and that access to technology can help everyone unlock their highest potential,” said Stacy Erb, Apple’s Director of Community Education Initiatives. “Coding gives students the tools to think creatively while developing skills that open doors to great careers. We’re excited to build on our long history in the classroom by working alongside Teach for America to bring coding to even more students in every corner of America."

“We’re grateful that Apple is partnering with us to reimagine what is possible in order to improve education in America, and to invest in learning opportunities that bring students real joy and engagement,” said Aneesh Sohoni, Teach For America’s Chief Executive Officer. "Coding builds problem-solving skills, sparks creativity, and helps students see themselves as innovators, opening doors to opportunities that all students should have access to.”

Students who were part of this year’s pilot program have already learned basic coding concepts with Swift and designed their own apps that address unique challenges in their communities. Last week, schools from coast to coast hosted app showcases to choose a top app design that will compete in this week's nationwide showcase.

Finalists include:

  • “BLUE” from Merrill Middle School in Denver, CO – to help turn your fixed mindset into a growth mindset
  • “Altitude Sickness Detector” from Merrill Middle School in Denver, CO – to help combat altitude sickness while hiking
  • “Help Them” from Westdale Heights Academic Magnet in Baton Rouge, LA – to help kids learn how to be kind and stop bullying
  • “Stockton 411” from Unbound Stockton Community School in Stockton, CA – a resource with all of the news, resources, and events happening in Stockton in one place

Tomorrow, the finalists will present their apps to a panel of judges at TFA’s national app showcase, with prizes for the winning team.

This new initiative is an expansion of Apple and TFA’s partnership, which started in 2021 and is supported by Apple’s Community Education Initiative. Since then, Apple and TFA have worked together to bring technology and coding and creativity activities into public schools across the country.
