'I Can't Afford to be Broke'
We know what’s running through your head right now. You’re nearing graduation or thinking about a career jump. And while you have plenty of options, you keep coming back to this incredible opportunity to become an educator with Teach For America. You love the mission, but you can’t shake the question, “Can I really build the life I want on a teacher’s salary?”
We get it. Securing the bag is a non-negotiable. So, let’s break down the money. Here’s what you can expect to earn with Teach For America and how this experience sets you up for financial and personal growth as you improve students’ lives.
Years 1 & 2: Making Life Make Cents
As a Teach For America corps member, you will be a full-time, paid teacher hired by a local district. Not a volunteer. As a corps member, you’ll receive:
- Upfront Financial Support: TFA provides transitional aid before you start work to bridge the gap until your first school paycheck. This includes a $3,000-$6,500 baseline stipend for summer training. Need-based financial support—which can be an interest-free loan or a grant—helps cover relocation, testing, and initial certification costs. To top things off, an additional $3,000 stipend is available for Pell Grant recipients and for individuals from low-income backgrounds who are not receiving federal student aid.
- A Competitive Teacher Salary: You will earn the same starting salary as any teacher in your region. It typically ranges from $32,000 to $72,000 a year, depending where you’re placed. Use our Explore Regions tool (featured below) to compare teacher salaries and cost of living across TFA's placement regions.
- Essential Benefits: Your school will offer you benefits like health insurance, vacation/sick time, and retirement benefits (often including public pension plans or 403(b) options). This is key to an entry-level job right out of the gate.
Now, let’s talk about everyday life.
To create financial freedom, during this two-year period, you’ll learn how to finesse your budget. Accessing teacher perks like exclusive retailer discounts and classroom supply grants from educator-specific credit unions can make your money go further.
Treating your budget as a critical thinking tool can also help you live well while serving. Say you’re on a $45,000 salary. If you pick a rural city with $800 rent, you can fund a hobby that doubles as a student passion project. Or split an apartment in the city with roommates to be near tech pros who want to mentor your kids. These calculated plays reduce financial burnouts and bring your best energy to your community.
Our TFA alumni know this all too well. Learn how financial experts and TFA alumni Yanely Espinal and Ray’Chel Wilson teach young professionals to take charge of their paychecks to fuel their interests and community impact.
