Our Mission

The mission of The Collective of Charlotte is to increase the capacity within our revolution and change the reality of people of color within Teach For America - Charlotte.

The Collective serves as a place to share and celebrate our individual stories, while building a network of relationships that promotes opportunities for growth, internally and externally. Members of The Collective lead with their values and are consulted for their knowledge and experiences to build the cultural competence of our region.

What We Do

The Collective engages, empowers, and equips alumni, current corps members, and future corps members of color with the tools to embody leadership in any career path. These leaders will continue to be agents of change in the pursuit of transforming Charlotte into a national proof point for educational equality.

The Collective - Charlotte is a regional chapter of Teach For America's National Collective.

Story Slam

The story slam is an annual gathering of corps members, alumni, staff, and community members. Throughout the evening, educators, advocates, and leaders tell deeply personal stories on stage that both inspire and challenge us. The Collective Charlotte Story Slam is an entertaining and emotional opportunity for a diverse audience to experience a variety of perspectives. Additionally, all proceeds go towards transitional funding for incoming educators of color or students transitioning to college.

People of Color Reception

The People of Color Reception is an opportunity for current and incoming corps members, and alumni to network, enjoy fellowship, and honor each other. The reception serves three purposes:

  • Welcome incoming corps members into Charlotte
  • Induct second-year corps members into the Collective
  • Recognize and celebrate alumni and community members who embody The Collective values.

During the reception, catalyst awards are also presented to nominated change-makers within the Charlotte region.

Winter Social

Alumni, along with current first and second-year corps members are afforded the opportunity to kick back, network, enjoy some fellowship, and relax before winter break. The Collective Winter Social always takes place in early December and typically consists of some form of entertainment, and of course food, fun, and conversation.
