New Mexico Teach For America New Mexico Launches Resource Website for Prospective Teachers

Teachnewmexico.org Offers 1:1 Coaching and Tutorials for Teacher Licensure Process

Albuquerque, N.M. — Teach For America (TFA) New Mexico recently launched teachnewmexico.org, an informational website that aims to increase information and support for individuals considering teaching as a career.

The website offers a variety of resources and guidance for both prospective and current teachers, including:

  • Video tutorials to help prospective teachers navigate the certification process and consider the multiple pathways to licensure that exist in the state
  • A sign up form to receive 1:1 coaching with a member of TFA New Mexico staff
  • Financial planning support, including salary estimates, grants and scholarships, and loan forgiveness options

Since its soft launch earlier this school year, TFA has already received more than 30 requests from prospective teachers for consultation in navigating the licensure process and understanding  pathway options. Those who have asked for support come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, from current teacher substitutes to PhD graduates to professionals looking to switch careers.

“When we are facing more than 1,000 teacher vacancies, the last thing we want is a great, prospective teacher to drop out of the process because they are confused about how to enter the profession,” said Missy Wauneka, Head of Region for TFA New Mexico. “We’re glad to see progress being driven at the local and state level to address teacher recruitment and retention challenges, and we’re committed to playing our part through collaborative efforts like this website that decrease barriers to entry.”

The website is part of TFA New Mexico’s broader strategy to identify and strengthen key transition moments in teacher recruitment and retention. Over the past 20 years, the organization has developed extensive resources and experience in supporting hundreds of teacher candidates in New Mexico to select a training program, receive a teaching license and find school-based positions. The website seeks to share learnings and resources with all prospective teacher candidates in the state and also improve the experience for school and district hiring managers, some of whom are already entering the hiring season for the 2022-23 school year.

The organization is working closely with teachers, schools, districts and licensure programs across the state to ensure that information is up-to-date and that new valuable resources are regularly added.

Current and prospective educators can browse the website at teachnewmexico.org
