What Do You Need to Become an Online Tutor?

You don’t necessarily need teaching experience to become an online tutor, but you do need to communicate clearly, be willing to learn, and be ready to build relationships with students.

Depending on the tutoring job, you may need to:

• Be enrolled in or have completed college
• Know the subject you’ll tutor
• Commit to the same hours each week
• Have reliable internet and a computer
• Meet background check or other eligibility requirements
• Complete training or onboarding

To become a Teach For America Ignite fellow, you must:

• Have at least a 2.5 undergraduate GPA, or a 3.0 high school GPA if you’re a college freshman
• Be available to work up to five hours per week during K–12 school hours
• Be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the U.S.

Ignite is open to current undergraduates, graduate students, TFA alumni, and returning fellows.

We’re looking for people who believe in the potential of kids, are willing to learn from others, and can work well with people whose experiences and perspectives may be different from their own. You’ll get training and support for the rest. What you bring is your experience, unique perspective, and willingness to learn.

What Does an Online Tutor Actually Do?

Online tutoring with TFA is more than logging on to a video call and helping kids get the right answer.

As an Ignite fellow, you’ll work with the same small group of students over time. You’ll figure out where they’re getting stuck. You’ll try other ways of explaining things when the first explanation doesn’t click. And you’ll build the kind of relationship that helps a student to know someone is in their corner.

That takes practice. It also builds skills you can take almost anywhere.

You’ll learn how to communicate clearly, adjust when something isn’t working, solve problems, give useful feedback, and build trust. And unlike a lot of college jobs, you get to see why your work matters while you’re doing it.

How Much Do Online Tutors Get Paid?

Pay for online tutoring varies based on the employer, subject level, and how much you work. Some tutoring jobs pay by the hour. Other programs offer a stipend or another form of compensation. So, don’t compare online tutoring jobs for college students on the advertised rate alone. Look at the whole experience. How many hours will you work? Is training included? Will you have someone to turn to when you need help? Can you realistically fit the schedule around classes?
