The Corps is a two-year, full-time teaching commitment in an underserved community—paid, and built to develop real leadership skills. TFA Ignite is for current college students: a paid, part-time virtual tutoring fellowship, about five hours a week for a semester. Many Ignite fellows go on to join the Corps. It's the same mission, at different points on the path.
No. Corps members commit to at least two years in the classroom, and many stay longer, but you don't need to plan a teaching career. People join from all majors and backgrounds, and alumni go on to work in education, policy, law, medicine, business, and beyond. No matter where you go, we hope you’ll stay connected to the mission—advancing educational opportunity in your career, your community, and your life.
Not at the same time, but you can do both in sequence. If you're accepted into the Corps while still in school, you can tutor with Ignite before your placement begins. TFA alumni are also eligible for Ignite.
You're supported from the start. Pre-Service training begins with online onboarding and about two weeks of live virtual sessions, followed by a summer practicum where you practice teaching before your first school year. Ongoing training continues through the year. You'll work with a dedicated coach, your corps cohort, and regional staff, and you'll join a lifelong alumni network. Training details vary by region.
Admission is selective. The first stage is an online application. Applicants that are selected to move forward to the second stage of our admissions process are invited to interview with a Teach For America staff member. Interviews include a five-minute lesson, a case activity, and a conversation about your experiences. Candidates are reviewed holistically and evaluated on competitiveness, not on when they apply. You don't need an education background.
