As a Teach For America corps member, you’ll develop strengths that are critical to being a successful teacher in a low-income community. These skills are also essential to leadership across many other professions and sectors. Many exceptional graduate schools and employers value corps members’ talent, resolve, and commitment to educational equity, and actively recruit corps members and alumni and offer them special benefits to recognize their experience in the corps.

University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Education, North Carolina
  • Application Fee Waiver: This provision remains; however, the waiver can be claimed ONLY if the TFA students applies during his/her second year of TFA service. We are no longer allowed to waive the application fee for alumni.
  • Deferral: The deferral remains, but is now limited to a ONE year deferral. At the end of the deferral period, a student who does not enroll must re-apply to the program.
  • Waive the program requirement of a third year of teaching: This provision remains; HOWEVER, the State of North Carolina requires that someone applying for principal licensure have THREE years of teaching experience in order to be recommended for the license. Thus, theoretically, someone can obtain an MSA degree after having completed two years of teaching, but would not be eligible for licensure until a third year of teaching was completed. We recommend the following as very reasonable options for TFA members:
  • Option A: 1. APPLY during your second year of service. Application fee is waived. 2. Request a deferral for one year, complete a third year of teaching through TFA or elsewhere. 3. Attend UNC thereafter, having completed three years of teaching. Complete the MSA degree, which includes a full-time internship and scholarship in the second year, and receive licensure recommendation for K-12 principal.] upon successful completion of the degree. http://soe.unc.edu/academics/msa/
  • Option B: 1. APPLY to our MSA Flex program during your second year of service. Application fee is waived. 2. Our FLEX program begins in the spring semester of every year. Students work full-time and take take three courses per semester (which is considered FULL-TIME). Thus, they can begin their MSA in the spring following their TFA commitment, continue working for their third year of teaching and beyond and be enrolled in the MSA program. When they graduate with their MSA degree, they will have completed four years of teaching and would receive their licensure recommendation immediately upon completion of the MSA. Students in the FLEX program have a CHOICE of completing a part-time (unpaid) internship and continue teaching OR a full-time internship, in which case they would receive the scholarship. http://soe.unc.edu/academics/msa_flex/
  • Option C: 1. Apply to the new part-time on-campus MSA program during their second year of service. Application fee waived. 2. Begin study immediately upon completion of their TFA commitment, and work as a teacher while they are in the MSA part-time program. Upon completion of the part-time program, students will have 3-5 years of teaching experience and would receive a licensure recommendation immediately upon successful degree completion. Part-time students complete part-time (unpaid) internships and are not eligible for the scholarship. Students have the option of taking 1-4 courses per semester in the part-time program and have five years to complete the program. http://soe.unc.edu/academics/msa/ (see the first page overview that outlines the part-time strand)
  • Those students who complete the FULL-TIME internship remain eligible for the scholarship stipend. The scholarship continues to be contingent upon state funding. The revised scholarship amount/stipend is now approximately $38,600. No payback required.
