Learn more about the process for becoming certified to teach in the Buffalo region.
Becoming Certified to Teach
In order to teach in New York State, Buffalo corps members will enroll in the Transitional B Certification pathway from the New York State Education Department through their graduate program. Corps members earn initial certification after enrollment, and are expected to complete the two-year master's program.
Corps members will be considered certified and highly qualified for up to three years as long as they have met the following criteria:
- Passed the required state exams
- Enrolled in and maintained good academic standing with a graduate program until completion of the program
- Remained a Teach For America corps member for the full two-year commitment
Corps members who were previously certified in New York or another state will be guided through a different certification pathway by staff.
All Buffalo corps members are required to complete a master's degree at Canisius College in order to receive their license.
