Reimagining Public Education in Greater New Orleans: Reflections, Lessons Learned, and Choices Ahead

The public discussion of educational change and progress in New Orleans tends toward ideological polarization. But past the controversy, there is a complex story of the destruction and recreation of a school system, unparalleled gains in student achievement, a new way of governing schools, a changing teaching force, and a shift away from neighborhood schooling. Real questions emerge from this story about the challenging choices required of a community as it reimagines and rebuilds its public education system. This session will push beyond the debates and seek to learn from New Orleans leaders and residents on what went right, what they would do differently, and how the lessons they learned might apply in your community.
