Juliana is an Associate Managing Director for Uncommon Schools-Newark, managing a number of the North Star Academy Elementary and Middle Schools. Previously, Juliana was a principal with North Star Academy for five years. She was also the founding principal of Uncommon Schools’ first turnaround elementary school, Alexander Street Elementary in Newark. Under her leadership, in one year, students tied the New Jersey state average in ELA performance and outperformed the state’s noneconomically disadvantaged students in Math by 13%, as measured by the end-of-year Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exams. Juliana also does extensive work as a curriculum writer for Uncommon Schools, supporting K-4 literacy development.
Juliana is co-author of the book Great Habits, Great Readers, a comprehensive guide for K-4 reading instruction in the light of Common Core. Additionally, Juliana’s leadership has been featured in the book Leverage Leadership, as well as numerous articles, for her ability to develop teachers and leaders in the areas of data analysis, curriculum planning, and classroom instruction. Juliana has supported school principals in cities around the country, as they worked to launch new schools or raise student achievement in existing schools.
Juliana has done adjunct professor work for the Relay Graduate School of Education and the Summer Principals Academy program at Teachers College, Columbia University. She holds a B.A. in political science from Rutgers University and an M.A. in education leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University.
