Joel I. Klein is the Chief Policy and Strategy Officer at Oscar Insurance and a former Executive Vice President of News Corp. Klein served as the Chancellor of the NYC Department of Education from 1998 to 2010, overseeing a system of over 1,600 schools with 1.1 million students, 136,000 employees, and a $22 billion budget. He launched Children First in 2002.
Mr. Klein is the former Chairman & CEO of Bertelsmann, Inc., served as Assistant U.S. Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice until September 2000, and was Deputy White House Counsel to President Clinton from 1993-1995. He entered the Clinton administration after 20 years of public and private legal work.
Mr. Klein is a Director of News Corp, Amplify, Boston Properties, Inc., and on the Board of Advisors of Point72 and several non-profit organizations, including Teach For America, Foundation for Excellence in Education, Board of Visitors of Columbia College, and Chair of StudentsFirst New York. Mr. Klein received his B.A. from Columbia University in 1967 and earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1971, graduating both magna cum laude. His book, “Lessons of Hope: How to Fix Our Schools” was published November 2014.
