Joseph Manko is the principal of Liberty Elementary School in Baltimore City, Maryland. Out of 158 schools, Liberty is the tenth highest performing school in Baltimore City with 85% of students scoring proficient or advanced in mathematics and 90% of students scoring proficient or advanced in reading. Liberty currently services 423 students in the Liberty Heights neighborhood. 93.5% of students at Liberty qualify for the Federal Free and Reduced Meals program. Liberty boasts the largest field trip program in the city with each child going on eight to ten field trips each year. The school is also the site of the first attempted one-to-one mobile program in Baltimore City with 300 iPads and 60 laptops being used daily by students. Through a partnership with the Digital Harbor Foundation, Mr. Manko has worked to provide a rigorous seven week technology training program for four of his teachers, afterschool technology driven programming daily for 130 students, and ongoing professional development for his teachers through a student-driven reverse mentoring initiative. Liberty Elementary is also the site of the newly launched Liberty Rec and Tech Center, an adjacent recreation center building directed at providing wrap around services to community members. Mr. Manko is a National Board Certified Teacher, Fulbright Scholar, America Achieves Fellow, New Leaders For New Schools Cohort Member, Teach For America Corps Member, and Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins and Towson University.
