Practicing Self-Care with Lumosity

Nearly 46 percent of teachers experience high daily stress, which can compromise health, sleep, quality of life, and teaching performance, according to a recent report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

To combat this stress, it’s vital for teachers to develop regular self-care practices. We know that self-care is also a critical component in your growth as a leader. By taking care of yourself, you foster your own resilience, motivation, self-awareness, and ability to sustain momentum in your work.

Self-care rituals will vary depending on your personality. For some, it may mean a sweaty workout. For others, it may be enjoying a hot bath at the end of the day.

To supplement your current self-care practices—whatever they may be—we’re partnering with Lumosity to provide free brain training programs to corps members and alumni teachers.

Lumosity offers a wide range of activities designed to challenge you. It’s best-known for its cognitive training games, which focus on skills like memory and attention, but it has recently expanded its offers to more holistic experiences. Lumosity players can now challenge themselves with verbal and math games designed to be fun, so challenging yourself feels rewarding, instead of another item on your to-do list.

Lumosity also recently introduced a series of mindfulness experiences. These short activities—only three to five minutes long—are designed to help you practice concentration and gain mental clarity.

How can you use Lumosity as part of a self-care practice? Here are some ideas:

  • Warm-up: Enjoy a few Lumosity games with your coffee for a chance to immerse yourself in brief, satisfying activities before taking on your day.
  • Commute productively: Use the Lumosity app on your phone to brush up on vocab and math skills or practice mindfulness on-the-go.
  • Take a break: Use your lunch time wisely with mindfulness activities that encourage you to refocus on your teaching performance for the rest of your day.
  • Wind down: Bedtime is another great time to try a mindfulness activity, helping you to slow down and focus on breathing.
