Living Here

Neighborhood Highlight

As developers have revitalized the downtown area over the last decade, more corps members have chosen to take advantage of affordable loft-style housing along Washington Avenue and surrounding streets. New restaurants arrive each year. City Garden has become a new favorite place for young families and office workers alike and features sculptures and other work by local artists. The City Museum is a must-see attraction for tourists and residents—from the ferris wheel on the roof to slides spanning multiple stories in the old shoe factory building, it is not to be missed. Downtown residents enjoy Cardinals games, a farmer's market, and free outdoor concerts in the summer.

Living Here

St. Louis blends an East Coast edge with West Coast ease and a touch of Southern hospitality. From dining in an array of restaurants on The Hill to enjoying a show at the Fabulous Fox Theater, St. Louis offers all of the diverse entertainment and dynamic energy of a big city with the soul of a small town. Three professional sports franchises as well as facilities for everything from ice skating to golf in Forest Park mean that spectators and participants alike can enjoy a variety of athletic activities. And with one of the lowest costs of living in the United States,  it's easy to see why St. Louis is a great place to live.

One of St. Louis' best perks is the abundance of affordable housing. The options range from turn-of-the-century homes to brick bungalows to modern downtown high-rises and lofts. The city's light traffic allows for short commute times to placement schools, enabling corps members to live in the neighborhood of their choice. Many St. Louis corps members opt to share apartments in order to save on rent and build a support system outside the classroom. Three popular spots for corps members to call home are Tower Grove, Soulard (the historic French district), and Benton Park, on the south side of the city.

St. Louis corps members teach in four school districts and several city charter schools in neighborhoods that include the Ville and Walnut Park. Placement schools range from North County's Hazelwood, Riverview Gardens, and Normandy School Districts to more central locations like the St. Louis Public Schools. The city is easy to navigate and most areas are accessible within 20 minutes by car.
