Certification Information
To teach in the state of Missouri, all corps members have to be Highly Qualified under the requirements of No Child Left Behind. In St. Louis, this means that corps members must obtain a provisional certificate, which is valid throughout their two-year teaching commitment. Provisional certificates are nonrenewable and will ultimately lead to full initial certification. To obtain a provisional certificate, all corps members are required to complete nine credit hours of certification coursework through Buena Vista University during their first semester of teaching and complete an academic contract. In addition to completing the coursework at Buena Vista, all corps members are required to take and pass the Praxis II in their assigned content area.
Starting in the first semester of teaching, corps members are required to enroll in certification courses with the University of Missouri - St. Louis (UMSL) to obtain their initial certification, which will be completed upon finishing their two-year commitment. In addition to obtaining an initial certification, each corps member has the opportunity to earn a master's in education within their two-year commitment.
