Teach For America Placement Schools
Where Corps Members Teach
Teach For America • South Louisiana is unique in that it includes a major city (Baton Rouge) as well as many small towns, all within a 50-mile radius. Corps members teach in the East Baton Rouge parish school system and in towns to the north like New Roads, Clinton, and Greensburg. These are the lowest performing school districts in one of the lowest performing states in the nation, making corps members’ work here especially vital.
Get to Know Jackson Middle School
Led by principal Allison El Koubi (South Louisiana, 2000), Jackson Middle School in rural East Louisiana Parish has had ten Teach For America corps members and alumni among its teaching staff. In both 2010 and 2011, students of these corps members and alumni have made a year and half of academic progress in just one year's time – more than four times the average result across the state of Louisiana. Based on the Jackson example and others like it, local leaders have become active partners in expanding Teach For America’s presence in South Louisiana.
