Certification Information
In Louisiana, corps members must take and pass the Praxis Series assessments before teaching and enroll in a certification program during their two-year commitment. All 2011 South Louisiana corps members will be required to work toward certification through the 18-month Practitioner Teacher Program, unless certified prior to joining the corps. In order to complete the Practitioner Teacher Program successfully, candidates are required to do the following:
- Complete the Teach For America summer institute and related assignments
- Pass required exams, The Praxis Series: Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers
- Attend and participate in 15 three-hour content seminars, post-observation discussions, mentor meetings, and professional development opportunities
- Complete a teacher portfolio at the end of the first year of teaching
We partner with The New Teacher Project's TNTP Academy to help corps members obtain teaching certification.
Louisiana State University's graduate school has a unique partnership with the region, allowing corps members free tuition for graduate courses (excluding Louisiana State University schools of Medicine, Law, and Dentistry) during their two-year corps commitment.
