Where Corps Members Teach

South Dakota corps members teach on the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Reservations, which are between Pierre and Rapid City in the southwest part of the state.  They are placed in Todd County School District, American Horse School, Crazy Horse School, Little Wound School, Saint Francis Indian School, and Wounded Knee School. Nationwide, Native Americans have the lowest levels of educational attainment, with 10% holding college degrees. Our corps members focus on setting transformational goals with their students, provide college prep and tutoring, and work together with their entire school staffs to improve student achievement.

Get to Know Saint Francis Indian High School

In Saint Francis Indian High School, corps members make up more than 50% of the teaching staff. The teachers join together to set quantitative goals as a group, including working to ensure that freshmen don’t drop out, encouraging students to apply for Gates Scholarships, increasing ACT scores, and increasing attendance rates. The goals they set guide the indicators of success for the entire school. In 2010, the school made adequate yearly progress (AYP), a measurement defined by the No Child Left Behind Act, for the first time because the teachers worked with the administration to expand impact. The percentage of seniors planning to attend college doubled between 2010 and 2011.
