Neighborhood Highlight

Once an independent city, Columbia City was annexed by Seattle in the early 1900s. After falling victim to poverty and decline in the mid-20th century, the neighborhood was named a historic district in 1980 and within a decade gentrification began.Today, middle class housing and million-dollar homes coexist in Columbia City, which is often referred to as the most racially and socioeconomically diverse neighborhood in Seattle. The main commercial area on Rainier Avenue S. is lined with popular restaurants, boutiques, art galleries, and book stores. Known for being a progressive community, Columbia City also boasts a not-for-profit bike shop and a biodiesel co-op. Corps members living in the neighborhood enjoy affordable housing near many of the schools where they teach.

Situated in the Northwest corner of the United States, the Puget Sound region is nestled between lush forests, majestic mountains, and wonderful waterways. The rare combination of natural beauty and modernity makes Seattle and its neighboring communities one of America’s most beautiful metropolitan areas. Residents of the Puget Sound enjoy their region for all that it has to offer. The breathtaking views, enriching cultural programs, historical sites, and innovative spirit of the region combine to make the Puget Sound truly one of the most unique places to live in the U.S.
The Puget Sound area is home to a plethora of niche communities. Each neighborhood truly has its own personality, from Capitol Hill’s vibrant nightlife to Columbia City’s incredible diversity to West Seattle’s proximity to the beach. Corps members living in Washington are able to find reasonably priced housing in these and numerous other neighborhoods throughout the region.
Outside of the classroom, there are countless ways to explore the beauty and culture in the Puget Sound. When the sun shines, the region’s outdoor culture emerges. Residents enjoy sea kayaking, sailing, hiking, cycling, mountain climbing and exploring the Bainbridge and San Juan Islands. Within the city of Seattle, new and exciting restaurants, shops, music venues, bars and the renowned Pike Place Market provide more than enough options to fill a first or second year teacher’s leisure time.
