Where Corps Members Teach
During the 2011-12 school year, corps members will teach nearly 20% of students in the San Antonio Independent School District—San Antonio’s oldest and most historic school district. The vast majority of corps members teach in neighborhoods within Highway Loop 410 and are heavily concentrated on the city’s west side and east side. In 2010, our charter year in San Antonio, our corps members taught over 10% of SAISD students, with 100% of our corps members teaching in high-need core subject areas (math, science, English, social studies) and over 30% in high-need placements such as English as a second language, bilingual, special education, and secondary math/science.
Get to Know Rodriguez Elementary School
Rodriguez Elementary is located on the west side of the San Antonio Independent School District, in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood near Our Lady of the Lake University. After observing that all three corps members in the school had established ambitious and measurable goals for their students – and were tracking student progress toward those goals – principal Ms. Vega asked the corps members to lead a professional development session for all of the teachers at Rodriguez. Rodriquez Elementary awarded one of our charter corps members, Eddy Hernandez, with the Rising Star Award (i.e., New Teacher of the Year Award).
