Teach For America Placement Schools
Where Corps Members Teach
Approximately 500 corps members teach in approximately 200 placement schools in the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Westchester County (just north of New York City).
The city itself is an incredible resource on its own, with hundreds of communities, each with a unique history and culture. Most corps members teach and many live in Harlem, Washington Heights, and Bedford-Stuyvesant, some of the most vibrant parts of the city.
Get to Know Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School
The Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS) is a grade 6-12 district school founded by Principal Brett Kimmel (Houston ’96) in 2006, and grounded in a culture of high expectations coupled with tremendous support. Corps members and alumni make up over half of the 40-person faculty.
In 2008, entering sixth graders were reading, on average, at a fourth-grade level. After three years at WHEELS, these students read, on average, at grade level—representing five years of growth in three years of school. Currently, 95% of WHEELS seniors are on track to graduate, and with Brett’s leadership, the staff is committed to helping the remaining five percent excel.
