Teaching in the Four Corners

New Mexico corps members teach in schools spread out over 13,000 square miles of the northwestern part of the scenic state, near the borders of Arizona, Colorado, and Utah. A few teach in small communities across the border in Arizona. Our placement schools are located mostly in small towns, rural reservations, and pueblo communities, with populations ranging from 200 to 10,000. Gallup, the largest town with the highest concentration of corps members, has a population of 20,000. Smaller reservation and pueblo communities include Zuni, Navajo, and Pueblo Pintado. Most corps members teach in schools with other corps members, so there is almost always a Teach For America support system in place. Many corps members opt to live together as well, often in teacherages, which are subsidized housing provided by the school district, located within walking distance of schools.

The Charter Corps in Southern New Mexico

Southern New Mexico corps members will join the communities and districts of Alamogordo, Las Cruces and Gadsden in fall of 2012. Similar to the northwest corner of the state, placement schools are spread out over 10,000 square miles across the southeastern corner of New Mexico, where corps members can have the opportunity to teach in a small city or rural area on the outskirts of town. Las Cruces, which is centrally located in the region, has a population of 95,000. Corps members teaching in the same district can choose to live together or near each other and will have many occasions to visit other parts of the region through various social and outdoor activities and major cultural festivals throughout the year.
