Neighborhood Highlight
Gallup, a city of more than 20,000, gains its richness from the intersection of its residents' cultures: Navajo, Pueblo, Mexican, and European descendants all call Gallup home. It is a place of contradiction, of beauty, and of honest dialogue. In Gallup, open-hearted generosity comes easily—you might be offered a joke at the counter in Maria's restaurant, or a wide smile by a man watching his grandson dance at the Inter-Tribal Ceremonial in the mid-August shadows of Red Rock State Park. Every year, Gallup embraces our new corps members. Affordable apartments and homes are plentiful and rents are low. While technically a city, Gallup offers many small-town draws, including three movie theaters, great coffee shops, and a number of delicious restaurants. The community is also home to a Habitat for Humanity chapter, a farmer's market, and a yoga studio.
Living Here
You may never want to leave New Mexico. Beyond the deep red desert in the northwest and the towering Organ Mountains in the southeast, the landscape of New Mexico is infused with the culture of its people. This place, as Ellen Meloy writes, will seduce you. From the rural communities of Navajo and Chaparral, to the contemporary life of Gallup and Las Cruces, you will experience a land full of history, stories, and laughter.
New Mexico corps members in the Four Corners teach in schools spread out over 13,000 square miles, near the borders of Arizona, Colorado, and Utah. Our placement schools are located mostly in small towns, rural reservations, and pueblo communities, with populations ranging from 200 to 20,000. Most corps members teach in schools with other corps members and often choose to live together in teacher housing, so there is almost always a support system in place.
Known also as the "Borderlands," the area between southern New Mexico and western Texas melds into a fusion of different cultures that celebrate a variety of traditions of largely Spanish and Mexican influence. Immerse yourself in the lifeblood of the region between El Paso, Las Cruces, and Alamogordo, where corps members live in small towns and cities. You'll find the people here welcoming and community-oriented, and there's always room for one more at the table.
