Teach For America Placement Schools
Where Milwaukee Corps Members Teach
Corps members work in virtually every grade and subject area in Milwaukee’s traditional and charter public schools. About half teach in secondary placements and half are at the elementary or early childhood education level. We place in traditional and charter public schools as well as other independent schools across the city. Milwaukee corps members enjoy a city with a rich cultural history known for festivals, food, and diverse neighborhoods. Geographically, it is a small city and everyone lives within about 20 minutes of any school in town, which means that corps members mostly live together wherever they choose.
Get to Know Carmen High School
In 2007, Patricia Hoben had an inspiring and uncompromising vision – to create the first open enrollment college prep high school in Milwaukee. To do so, Dr. Hoben knew she needed passionate teachers to help build a culture committed to the idea that all students can learn. She hired four Teach For America teachers, a quarter of her total staff, who taught students both before and after school while revamping curricula to ensure strong rigor. With Dr. Hoben’s leadership, the corps members and other teachers led Carmen students to the highest ACT growth in Milwaukee in 2010-11 – up three points from the beginning to end of the year.
