Teach For America Placement Schools
Where Corps Members Teach
Miami-Dade County Public Schools is the largest school district in Florida, the fourth largest in the country, and the second largest minority school system in the United States. We currently place corps members in large groups, known as "clusters," in 21 elementary, middle, and high schools throughout Miami-Dade County, from Liberty City, Overtown, and Little Haiti in the north to Homestead in the south. Our corps member and alumni work in classrooms, extracurricular projects, and volunteer efforts has built support in our community. These corps members and alumni have created innovative tutoring programs and homework labs, and lead after-school dance troupes, sports teams, and spoken word groups.
Get to Know Miami Central Senior High School
Miami Central Senior High, located in the West Little River Community, received a “D” or “F” grade from the state every year from 2000 through 2010 and had a graduation rate of just 36%. In 2009, Teach For America Miami-Dade placed every one of its high-school teachers at Central, with eight in the math department alone. In partnership with Central’s principal, these corps members created an intensive mathematics cohort, aimed at helping the lowest performing 20% of students. By the end of the year, they achieved a 44% increase in the number of students achieving gains in mathematics and were part of a turnaround that has been recognized by President Obama as one of the most significant in the nation – the graduation rate has nearly doubled to 63%. Based on these results, Central doubled the number of Teach For America corps members teaching there during the 2010-11 school year, and remains one of our largest partner schools in the district.
