Teach For America Placement Schools
Where Corps Members Teach
Corps members make up only 3% of Memphis City Schools’ teachers but teach in 85 of the city’s lowest-performing and highest-need traditional and charter public schools. A growing number of corps members are teaching at schools founded and led by Teach For America alumni, including Memphis College Prep, Veritas Prep, KIPP Memphis Collegiate High School, and others.
Get to Know Kingsbury High School
In 2007, 45 percent of Kingsbury High School students scored proficient on the end of year math exam and only 13 percent scored advanced. That fall, three first-year corps members joined Kingsbury’s math team: Daniel Eyer, McKenzie Byrd and Anna Herzog. After realizing how far behind their students were, they quickly made a plan for how to catch their students up. They engaged with veteran teachers in the building to create strong lesson and unit plans, connected with community members to get volunteers to help tutor after school and on Saturdays, and worked directly with family members to ensure that their kids were getting support on homework and rides to and from tutoring. By the end of the year, 92 percent of Kingsbury students scored “proficient” on their math exam, with 56 percent scoring “advanced.”
