Living Here

Neighborhood Highlight

Charming, vibrant, and diverse, Midtown Memphis contains several smaller neighborhoods within its borders. Corps members living in Midtown enjoy its eclectic atmosphere, cultural opportunities, and beautiful scenery. Overton Square features many theaters and restaurants, and historic Cooper-Young is known for its quirky coffee shops, ethnic food, live music, and independent art galleries. Midtown is also home to Overton Park, the Memphis Zoo, the Brooks Museum of Art, Memphis College of Art, and Rhodes College. Houses and apartments in the area tend to be renovated buildings from the 1920s-1940s that retain the unique structural character of the era.

Living Here

Memphis is a city that embraces its rich cultural heritage. The area originally prospered thanks to its convenient location on the banks of the Mississippi but made its true impact in the 20th century when it became the cultural hub of the Mid-South region.

Music is believed to be at the core of Memphis living as it has always permeated the fabric of the city. Recording companies such as Sun Studios and STAX Recordings are iconic reminders of the music and artists that brought acclaim to Memphis in the 1900s. This tradition of music continues to fuel generations of Memphians, keeping the local music scene alive, well, and ever-changing.

Memphians enjoy food just as much as they enjoy music (luckily most places offer the best of both), and a plethora of local restaurants offer unique cuisine every night of the year.

The Orpheum Theater, Playhouse on the Square, Southern Heritage Museum, and the Memphis College of Art are just a few of the visual and performing arts venues Memphians frequent. Tango dancing every third Thursday at the Brooks Museum, partaking in wine and art on a first Friday Trolley Night down South Main, chatting with the pandas on Free Tuesdays at the Memphis Zoo, or paddle boarding Saturdays in Shelby Farms are among the many activities that Memphians regularly engage in.

One of the most attractive aspects of Memphis is the high standard of living and affordable housing that is achieved at a relatively low cost. Compared to residents of other southern cities, Memphians enjoy considerably lower expenses with all the benefits of a large metropolitan area. Simply put, Memphis is a big city in a small town.
