Where Corps Members Teach
The Clark County School District (CCSD), the fifth largest school district in the nation, serves nearly 300,000 students who attend more than 337 schools. In the Las Vegas Valley, the achievement gap begins at the age of three. There are a high percentage of English language learners and families living in poverty, which demands an increased emphasis on competitive early childhood programs. Data show that children living in poverty are often less prepared to enter kindergarten than their more affluent peers, which is why we place teachers at Head Start sites to begin closing the achievement gap at the earliest point in a child’s academic development.
Get to Know Jerry Keller Elementary School
The Charlotte and Jerry Keller Elementary School opened in 2009. Principal Kerry Preston previously worked at an elementary school where she hired corps members and continues to hire corps members – there are two 2010 corps members and two 2007 alumni at the school. At Keller, 71.1% students have free or reduced lunch and there is a 30.7% transiency rate. Ben Salkowe and Rachel Warbelow, both Teach For America alumni, founded the Scholars Working OverTime (SWOT) program modeled after transformational charter schools. The SWOT program is the first extended-day, college-prep program for fifth graders in Las Vegas and will enter its second year with 64 new students in the summer of 2011.
