Neighborhood Highlight
The largest neighborhood in Kansas City, Midtown is made up of many smaller neighborhoods, each with its own character. Many of the city's universities, cultural destinations, and parks are located in Midtown, which is bordered on the east by the Blue River. Residential and friendly, Midtown offers corps members a variety of affordable housing options in close proximity to great dining, shopping and entertainment, as well as many of the schools in which they teach.
Living Here
The largest city in the state of Missouri, Kansas City is also known as "KCMO," to differentiate it from Kansas City, Kansas located across the river. The city's striking landscape offers beautiful parks, wide boulevards, fantastic architecture, and more than 200 fountains. Local diversions include world-class museums, a vibrant arts scene, superb shopping, and great blues and jazz clubs. Kansas City also proudly calls itself the "Barbecue Capital of the World," and boasts more than 90 barbecue joints—from small eateries to full-blown, nothing-but-barbecue restaurants.
The city is comprised of several different neighborhoods that each has a unique culture. No matter where corps members choose to live, they can get just about anywhere in 20 minutes by car. The Teach For America regional office is located in the central Crossroads District, where there are many restaurants, galleries, and coffee shops, and Kansas City corps members are always welcome to stop by.
Since establishing the Kansas City region in 2008, Teach For America has placed over 335 teachers in nearly every grade and subject area in traditional and charter public schools in the Kansas City, Missouri and the Hickman Mills school districts. Corps members who bring enthusiasm and energy to their schools and classrooms will find it easy to become part of the community. And with several Teach For America alumni currently living in the region, corps members will have access to support and guidance throughout their time in Kansas City.
