Teacher Certification Information
Incoming corps members take Praxis I and II examinations in order to be considered highly qualified in their grade level and content areas. Once testing is successfully completed, corps members are granted Transition to Teaching permits and enroll in graduate coursework at Marian University. Teach For America and Marian enjoy a close partnership that allows corps members to complete many course requirements while attending professional development sessions co-facilitated by Teach For America staff members. At the end of their two-year commitment, corps members earn a master’s degree and full teaching certification. From preparation for Praxis exams to creating a graduate course of study that is tailored to corps members’ professional needs, our staff works to maintain an environment of success at every level.
Notes and Clarifications
- Beginning teacher salary: If you have a master's degree in education, are placed in a bilingual classroom, or in a math/science classroom you may receive additional compensation.
- Avg. health insurance: In some placement districts, health insurance premiums are pre-tax deductions.
- Total tax rate: Federal + state + city. Only applies to starting salaries.
- Up-front certification: Expenses that must be paid before your first day of teaching.
- Paying start-up costs: Can you pay for testing and up-front certification costs with transitional grants and loans or do you have to pay out-of-pocket?
- Ongoing certification: Total certification costs over two-year teaching commitment.
