Where Corps Members Teach
Corps members in Houston teach in traditional and charter public schools in the city proper and in outlying areas like Bellaire, Alief, and Aldine. One-fifth of 2010 corps members teach in either KIPP or YES Prep Public schools, two public charter school networks founded by Teach For America • Houston alumni for youth growing up in poverty. Approximately 40% of corps members teach in elementary schools and 60% teach in secondary schools, while 95% teach at a school with another corps member or alumnus.
Get to Know Gallegos Elementary School
HISD’s Gallegos Elementary School became a Texas Education Agency “exemplary” campus for the first time in 2008-09, as 70% of students passed each TAKS test. Gallegos’ principal, Margarita Gardea, credits corps members and alumni for much of this success. There are 10 corps members and alumni who teach and take on leadership positions at the school including Crystal Smith (Houston ’04), the instructional coordinator and assistant principal. The entire fourth grade team is made up of corps members and alumni and is led by Catherine Clark (Houston ’09). Julie McPhillips (Houston ’08) runs the Robotics team. Ben Glover (Houston ’08) is fifth grade team lead and science content lead. Karin Espinosa (Houston ’09) coaches cheerleading. Ryan Presley (Houston ’08) coaches the math team and serves as the math lead teacher and testing coordinator.
