Teach For America Placement Schools
Where Corps Members Teach
Corps members teach in 30 schools on Oahu and the Big Island in a diverse range of schools, including Native Hawaiian Homesteads, military bases, and some charter schools. There is a tremendous diversity of students we reach in terms of race and culture. On the Big Island, the seaside town of Kailua-Kona is home to many of our corps members. On Oahu, our corps members can enjoy lots of activities across the island, such as the surfing culture on the North Shore, the proud local communities on the leeward coast, the fast-paced energy of Honolulu and Waikiki, or any of the other towns in the central areas of the island. Corps members often get involved in community events and take an active interest in involving parents in their students’ classroom.
Get to Know James Campbell High School
James Campbell High School is the largest public school in the State of Hawai‘i. Teach For America • Hawai‘i corps members began teaching at Campbell High School during the 2006-07 school year and today the school includes 18 corps members; together corps members and alumni make up nearly one-third of the faculty. Over the past five years, these teachers have helped increase the school's reading and math scores by 17% and 43%, respectively, outpacing the Hawai‘i State Average. Former Principal Gail Awakuni cited Teach For America teachers as a large factor in the school’s turnaround, stating, “TFA teachers have been instrumental in our transformation – in academic and social literacy. They have contributed positively in changing our school culture to one of high achievement, high expectations and standards.” We are excited to have a Campbell graduate join our 2011 corps. He teaches math at his alma matter.
