Where Corps Members Teach

There are over 370 schools serving low-income students in Philadelphia and Camden.  Teach For America places corps members in over 100 of these schools, reaching nearly 30,000 students a day, the great majority of whom are African American or Latino.  Our corps members teach everywhere from elementary schools like North Philadelphia’s Munoz Marin Elementary to comprehensive high schools like South Philadelphia High School to K-12 charter schools like Camden’s LEAP Academy to schools that are part of city-wide charter school systems like Mastery Charter Schools and Scholar Academies.

Get to Know Mastery Charter Schools

Since 2001, Mastery has successfully turned around low-performing schools in the Greater Philadelphia area. Since Mastery has assumed management of turnaround schools in Philadelphia, its students have generally met or exceeded state assessments standards. All of Mastery’s students were accepted in college in 2009. Half of Mastery’s administrators are Teach For America alumni and more than a third of its teaching staff are Teach For America corps members and alumni.

Teryn Phillips (Greater Philadelphia Corps ’10) teaches fourth grade math at a Mastery school and created a strong culture in her classroom, focusing her kids on their progress towards mini-goals. In Ashley Bozarth’s (Greater Philadelphia Corps ’10) kindergarten class, students did not even recognize the alphabet at the beginning of the year. Due to Ashley’s resourcefulness and careful planning, by year’s end they were on average at a 1.2 grade level equivalent, ensuring a leg up on literacy in first grade.
