Where Corps Members Teach
The Greater Newark region is centered in the city of Newark, which is the largest school district in New Jersey. Corps members collaborate with one another in clustered “feeder patterns,” to multiply our impact across grade levels and subject content areas. Additionally, due to unprecedented demand from partners in Passaic, Elizabeth, Orange and Paterson we have developed partnerships that will continually increase the number of corps members placed in these districts in the coming years.
Get to Know BRICK Avon Academy
Not long ago, Avon Avenue Elementary School was considered one of the lowest-performing K-8 schools in Newark and was among the ten worst schools in New Jersey. In 2010, six Teach For America alumni assessed the situation and emphatically stated, “we must do better for these kids.” And so BRICK Avon Academy was born.
Although it has only one full year under its belt, BRICK – which stands for Building Responsible Intelligent Creative Kids – has demonstrated that by doing things differently, all children can succeed. School leaders and Teach For America alumni Charity Haygood and Dominique Lee established a clear vision for a community of dual-language learners who graduate with International Baccalaureate accreditation. They started simple - painting, taking bars off the doors, reaching out to the community with block parties. Today, with partnership across the school's staff, elementary students at BRICK Avon Academy are achieving double-digit academic gains. This is the first example of what promises to be many successes for the school.
