Living Here

Neighborhood Highlight

Home to nearly an equal number of black, white, and Hispanic/Latino residents, as well as a sizable population of Asians, Jersey City is truly a racially and ethnically diverse community. The city is equally heterogeneous when it comes to socio-economics—all of which makes it a unique and interesting place to live. Surrounded by rivers and bays, Jersey City lies directly across the Hudson River from downtown Manhattan, but the city has excellent cultural, dining and nightlife destinations all its own. Rising rents in nearby Hoboken have helped Jersey City become a haven for young professionals, artists, and others looking for a vibrant community within the New York Metropolitan Area. Corps members in Jersey City have a variety of neighborhoods to choose from, all offering convenient access to the schools in which they teach, New York City, and popular Greater Newark landmarks such as Liberty State Park and the Liberty Science Center.

Living Here

A vibrant city that stands on a rich history of culture, technology, and education, Newark is literally framed in the lights of New York City. Newark is conveniently located just 10 miles from Manhattan’s world famous museums, parks, theaters and restaurants, but the city has its own rhythm—it is the heart of New Jersey's arts and cultural worlds. Newark is home to the New Jersey State Opera, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and Newark Symphony Hall.

Newark is arguably one of the most diverse cities in New Jersey. Whether you’re eating in a Portuguese restaurant in the Ironbound community or learning capoeira in a Brazilian studio, Newark provides an old world feel with new world amenities. Festivals and street fairs will lure you from your apartment—that is if you haven’t planned an exciting weekend getaway in NYC or at one of the many nearby state parks or beautiful beaches.

North and west of Newark are the suburban communities of Bloomfield, Belleville, and Montclair. These neighborhoods offer a host of unique stores, restaurants, parks, and cultural venues. Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, and Union City all sit along the Hudson River across from Manhattan, and each boasts a number of affordable, interesting neighborhoods with easy access to the schools in which our corps members teach as well as NYC.
