Teach For America Placement Schools
Where Corps Members Teach
Teach For America corps members teach in 40 schools in Nashville and the surrounding communities including Cheatham County and Rutherford County. More than 80% of our corps members are clustered with another corps member or alumni, approximately 20% teach in charter schools, and our corps members teach in virtually every subject area. MNPS is a vast and diverse school system, serving students from more than 80 different countries and of more than 70 different languages. Students of color represent 67% of Metropolitan Nashville’s students, and students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds represent 70% of the students.
Get to Know Cane Ridge High School
Cane Ridge High School is in Antioch, a diverse and growing community on the outskirts of Nashville. In 2009-10, only 16% of students passed algebra; in 2010-11, with Teach For America corps members comprising the entire algebra department faculty, more than half of students were proficient at Algebra 1. Corps members teaching other subjects are achieving success with their students as well. For example, Chris George’s (Greater Nashville ’10) world history students credit his level of commitment and excitement for helping to drive them to continue to succeed. While there is much to be done, these are small examples of what can be accomplished in just one school year.
