Living Here

Neighborhood Highlight

Legend has it that this area southwest of downtown Nashville—once a buffalo path—was first settled by a pioneering grandmother. In the 200 years since, the neighborhood encompassing 12th Avenue South and Granny White Pike has undergone numerous changes. Perennially labeled "up-and-coming," 12 South today is home to a thriving mix of working-class Nashvillians, artists, and young professionals, and the neighborhood's unique shops, restaurants, bars, and cafes reflect its diversity. When they're not teaching or lesson-planning, corps members who live in 12 South are likely to be found pulling up a chair at Mafioaza's for the city's best stone-oven pizza or stopping into Las Paletas for a handmade Mexican popsicle before heading to Sevier Park to walk the trails or shoot some hoops with their students, who live within walking distance in the neighboring community of Edgehill or attend Cameron College Prep around the corner.

Living Here

Nashville, also called Music City, is known not only as a vibrant hub for musicians and music lovers, but also for its rich history and welcoming culture. Corps members get to know the people here and fall in love with the city and the many opportunities for entertainment—and even the great outdoors—all within a close distance.

Nashville is a rarity in the United States: a large city with a low cost of living. Corps members have no trouble finding comfortable housing in one of the many urban and suburban neighborhoods, each with its own character and style. Greater Nashville offers big-city amenities with a small-town sense of community, where it’s common to stop by your local cafe and run into fellow teachers, alumni, students, and parents. This sense of community fuels our corps members within their schools and at home in their neighborhoods.

Nashville corps members teach in 40 public and charter schools in the city and surrounding communities, and more than 80% are clustered with another corps member or alumnus. In the region’s vast and diverse school system, corps members teach in virtually every subject area, serving students from more than 80 countries who speak more than 70 languages.
