Teach For America Placement Schools
Where Corps Members Teach
Massachusetts corps members teach in public schools, both traditional and charter, in Boston neighborhoods like Roxbury, South Boston, Dorchester, East Boston and Hyde Park; in nearby cities like Chelsea and Revere; and in Lawrence, a small former industrial city near the New Hampshire border. Later this year, Teach For America • Massachusetts expects to place corps members in Fall River, a high-need district to the south. Wherever possible, we work to cluster corps members in “turnaround schools” to maximize their impact on the students with the greatest need.
Get to Know Clarence R. Edwards Middle School
Once targeted for closure, the Edwards is now one of the highest-performing public middle schools in Boston. From 2006 to 2009, the Charlestown school erased the 8th grade math achievement gap and cut the reading achievement gap by 80%. Former principal Jeff Riley (Baltimore ’93), now Chief Innovation Officer for Boston Public Schools, helped lay the foundations for success, including extended learning time and using interim assessments to inform instruction, and current principal Leo Flanagan (New York ’90), director of instruction Amrita Sahni (Eastern North Carolina ’99), afterschool program director Stephanie Edmeade (Bay Area ’94) and other leaders continue to move the school forward.
