A Study in Contrasts
Massachusetts is home to some of the nation’s top colleges and best public schools. But in areas like Roxbury, Lawrence and Fall River, a shocking disparity exists – thousands of low-income students are far less likely to go to college than their nearby peers.

Accelerating Change
With more than 150 Teach For America corps members and 800 alumni, Teach For America • Greater Boston is helping build on Massachusetts’ legacy of educational leadership to improve the quality of education for kids growing up in poverty.

Working Within the System
Top Massachusetts schools – including Excel Academy, Edward Brooke Charter School and Boston Prep, all of which serve students in low-income communities – have excelled under the leadership and instruction of many Teach For America alumni, including 3 of our 35 local principals.

This is a watershed moment for Massachusetts schools. As one of 12 states awarded federal Race to the Top competitive grants, the state’s potential to transform its education system and close the achievement gap is unprecedented. Teach For America • Greater Boston has become a central partner in this effort.

We believe that talent and leadership – two characteristics that are traditional hallmarks of Massachusetts’ education system – are the keys to progress. We also believe that if we are to fulfill our commitment to educating students in communities where the achievement gap is most pervasive, we must go where the need is greatest.  To that end, Teach For America is bringing some of our nation’s brightest leaders to Boston, Lawrence, Chelsea, Revere and Fall River.  Working with our alumni and other local leaders, we are marshaling the resources required to bring individual success stories to scale in our region, and strengthening a movement of leaders working together in pursuit of educational equity.

Josh Biber joined Teach For America as a 2004 Phoenix corps member, when he led his fifth graders to two years of reading growth and more than 80 percent mastery of math content each year. Josh was a national semi-finalist for the Sue Lehmann Excellence in Teaching Award and later served as recruitment director for Teach For America at Brown and Harvard.

In 2008, Josh took on the challenge of establishing the Greater Boston region – first, as director of new site development, then as founding executive director. Josh graduated with honors from Brown University and earned a Master’s degree in Education from Arizona State University.
