Where Corps Members Teach

Corps members in Eastern North Carolina teach in clusters, so there are usually two or more corps members teaching at the same school. This fosters a strong and supportive corps culture in the region, improving corps member satisfaction and effectiveness.  Corps members teach in the city of Durham and in rural areas across the Northeastern part of the state, including towns like Oxford and Weldon.  Many corps members choose to live in or very close to the community where they teach. This allows them to engage with their students and the families outside of school through involvements in local YMCA and Boys and Girls clubs, or by offering tutoring off campus.

Get to Know Northampton County High School-West

Located in Gaston, a rural town less than 15 miles from the Virginia border, Northampton County High School-West is a grade 7-12 school where 91% of the student body is African American and 87% qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.  Since 2008, withleadership from the school's 28 teachers - more than half of whom are Teach For America corps members - Northampton-Wests' students' composite proficiency has risen from 25% to 62%.

In the coming years, the school hopes to increase student proficiency further in an effort to eliminate the achievement gap between students in Northampton County and more affluent communities.  Teach For America • Eastern North Carolina is excited to continue partnering with Felicia Wyche, the principal at Northampton West, and the other teachers and leaders in the district to build that level of change across the region.
