Where Corps Members Teach

Today, some 200 Teach For America • Detroit corps members teach in more than 32 traditional and charter public schools. Many corps member teach in Southwest Detroit, one of the city’s most ethnically and economically diverse neighborhoods, with a vibrant mix of Latino, White and African American residents. Several of our charter and traditional public schools are located in the city’s buzzing Midtown and New Center neighborhoods. They benefit from their immersion around the city’s world class cultural institutions including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and the Detroit Science Center. Midtown is home to “Tech Town” – a growing entrepreneurial effort to bring innovation and jobs to Detroit.  Students from across the city attend schools in this neighborhood and enjoy access and partnership with the surrounding community.

Get to Know Western International High School

Located just blocks from the Canadian border, Western International High School is the most culturally diverse school in Detroit. The five corps members working at Western work to engage students inside and outside the classroom by connecting students with neighborhood mentors and creating resource packets that include both school-year and summer opportunities for academic and community engagement. Corps members also worked together to create a classroom incentive plan to bolster attendance rates.
