Living Here

Neighborhood Highlight

Southwest Detroit is a thriving neighborhood that is home to a number of corps members. Known for its Hispanic population, the food and festivals in this area represent the rich culture of the students and families who live there. Corktown is close by and is another popular place for corps members to reside. Corktown is Detroit's oldest neighborhood and is well-known for its great Irish food, bar scene, and urban garden movement. This authentic and fun area is also home to Slows BBQ and Astro Coffee, two local businesses that have been buzzed about from coast to coast.

Living Here

Detroit may be a city struggling to stay on its feet, but residents here remain proud of their hometown. With the appeal of a big city and the charm of a small town, Detroit is the kind of tight-knit community where the local bartender knows your name and your neighbors truly care.

Our Detroit corps members are often surprised by all that the city has to offer, and develop a local pride that rivals that of lifelong residents. In the words of one current corps member, "Detroit is an amazing place to discover. It has a friendly midwestern ethos, a rich and complex history, and lots of hidden gems. It requires an adventurous type with an open mind, but it's worth earning your Detroit badge." Another says, "There is a steady undercurrent of energy in Detroit that underlies everything that everyone does. Being an emerging leader in the region also gives you the opportunity to influence the conversations about social change."

Corps members in Detroit teach in schools throughout the city and its surrounding communities. As Detroit residents, they enjoy a relatively low cost of living and have many attractive neighborhoods to explore and a variety of apartments and homes to consider.
