Neighborhood Highlight
A small historic district named for the Trinity Church it surrounds, Trinity Vicinity is considered a "hidden gem" by locals. Red brick row-houses line the streets of this uniquely charming and close-knit community, and an active neighborhood association warmly welcomes newcomers. Trinity Vicinity is centrally-located just a short walk from Downtown Wilmington, and is the perfect choice for corps members who prefer to commute to work by bike. Trinity Vicinity is less than .2 miles from William Lewis Elementary, less than a mile from Howard High School of Technology and a ten minute walk from the Teach for America Office.
Living Here
Currently, all of our corps members are placed in schools in and around Wilmington and Dover. For those placed in Wilmington, the majority of our corps members choose to live in the city’s downtown area. Wilmington offers a variety of excellent places to call home, with neighborhoods that run the gamut from fully urban apartment living to a more suburban aesthetic of stand-alone houses and tree-lined streets. The downtown area is easy to navigate, and while most corps members find it essential to have a car, many also take advantage of the nearby restaurants, cafes, and parks that are accessible on foot.
Wilmington’s Riverfront is one of the highlights of the city. During their downtime, our corps members enjoy walking along the Riverfront on their way to nearby restaurants, theaters, or a Blue Rocks baseball game. Also along the river are the Riverfront Market and the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts. For a special occasion, there’s nothing like taking a River Taxi ride along the Christina and learning the history of the area while enjoying a wine tasting.
Dover is Delaware’s state capital and the county seat, so it’s full of government workers in Legislative Hall and other state buildings. The town contains beautiful examples of Colonial architecture around The Green, a historic former marketplace, as well as beautiful Victorian homes on Governors Avenue and State Street. Dover is home to Delaware State University, one of the country’s top historically black colleges. First State Heritage Park links historical and cultural sites in the capital city, including the Delaware State Archives, the Biggs Museum of American Art, and the Johnson Victrola Museum. Every June and September, Dover becomes NASCAR country, hosting thousands of fans at Dover International Speedway.
Delaware corps members teach in a mix of traditional district and charter schools in the Greater Wilmington and Dover communities. Corps members teach in the state’s highest-need schools in a variety of placements, including special education, bilingual, early childhood, and math and science.
