Get to Know H. Grady Spruce High School
The Dallas school board reconstituted H. Grady Spruce High School—located in Pleasant Grove, in south Dallas—in June of 2008, declaring the school academically unacceptable based on student test scores. In 2009, the school re-opened to teach only a freshman class (as mandated by the state), working with students from the same community and socioeconomic status as previously attended the school.
The new principal hired two Teach For America corps members to join the new staff, both of whom went on to become department chairs the next year. Today, 14 teachers - 12% of Spruce's staff - are Teach For America teachers, all working as part of the turnaround initiative at the school. During the 2007-08 school year, 23% of Spruce students were proficient in math and 61% were proficient in reading, according to standardized test scores. Today, due to the efforts of corps members and other Spruce teachers, 66% of the school's students are now proficient in math, and 78% are proficient in reading.
