Where Corps Members Teach

Teach For America corps members teach in traditional and charter public schools in Bridgeport, New Haven and Stamford, on the southern coast of the state, and in Hartford and Torrington, in the central part of the state. In 2011-12, corps members will be reaching over 10,000 students in low-income communities statewide.

Get to Know Dr. Ramon E. Betances Elementary School

Dr. Ramon E. Betances Elementary School in downtown Hartford is a pre-K through 3rd grade school differentiated by its intensive focus on early literacy and its use of video analysis to help teachers continuously develop and improve, where 90% of students are English language learners.  Since 2009, grade-level proficiency in reading has increased from 0% of students in many grades to as high as 82% of kindergartners and 50% of fourth-graders. Principal Imacula Didier notes the school “has a long way to go” but values the partnership of Teach For America • Connecticut in helping realize her vision for the school’s students.
