Neighborhood Highlight

Known as the home of Yale University and the legendary Pepe's brick oven pizza, New Haven is a city rich in history and culture. A vibrant and diverse city, New Haven hosts numerous unique events throughout the year, from festivals on the Green to exhibits at the many local museums to a variety of Yale-related activities. New Haven's eclectic food scene is equally exciting, with delicious options ranging from Turkish to Indian to, of course, some of the best pizza you may ever eat. Corps members living in New Haven think of their new home as a small city with big city offerings, and enjoy its multi-faceted culture, affordable housing options, and proximity to the schools in which they teach.
Living Here
Connecticut corps members teach on the southern coast of Connecticut in the cities of Bridgeport, New Haven, and Stamford, and in the central part of the state in Hartford and Windham. Each area has its own unique charm and educational challenges.
Bridgeport is nicknamed "Park City" in reference to Seaside Park and Beardsley Park, created by Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of New York City’s Central Park. Bridgeport is the largest city in Connecticut and is known for its most famous former resident, circus-promoter and one-time mayor P.T. Barnum.
New Haven is home to Yale University, one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the country. It was also the site of the 1939 trials of the Amistad slave revolt. Culturally and economically diverse with plentiful dining and entertainment options, New Haven is an exciting and interesting place to call home.
Known as “New England’s Rising Star,” Hartford is striving to improve the quality of life for its residents. Sadly, it is also our nation’s second poorest city, and the economic contrast between the city and the surrounding communities is stark. Hartford's needs are many, but residents are eager to help their community live up to its potential.
Home to several large corporations, Stamford's downtown area has the feel of a big city financial district, and the city is consistently ranked as one of the safest and best places to live in the U.S.
Windham is located in the center of Eastern Connecticut, less than an hour's drive from the coast. It is also within easy driving distance of the ski resorts, lakes, hiking trails, hunting, and camping areas of northern New England. Windham is experiencing a major downtown revitalization that's positively changing the fabric of the city.
