Living Here

Neighborhood Highlight

Historic LoDo is an area known for its hipness factor: When MTV’s "The Real World" decided to film its 18th season in Denver, they moved their cast members into a large house in the district. A center of commerce in the early 20th century, Lower Downtown Denver slipped into a deep decline until the 1990s when new businesses moved in and a revitilization began. Many of this neighborhood’s original historic buildings have been renovated, and it is now home to trendy, upscale shops, restaurants, micro breweries, and apartments. Both Coors Field and the Pepsi Center are located in LoDo, and their renovations over the past decade have played a major role in the neighborhood's renewal. Corps members who call LoDo home love being right in the heart of the city's night life, art scene, and sports action.

Corps members in Colorado teach in schools in the scenic Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, where the student population is over 65% Hispanic and almost 90% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch. They teach in five districts and multiple charter partner schools in the Metro Denver Area and two districts and several charter partner schools in Colorado Springs. Teach For America - Colorado has plans to extend to several more areas within the state in 2012.

Denver combines a vibrant urban lifestyle with the open spaces and easy access to the outdoors that characterize the West. Nicknamed the “Mile-High City,” Denver is both Colorado's capital and its largest metropolis. Visitors to Denver can sense an optimism and energy about the city that manifests itself in many ways, from the sharp angles of the new wing of the Denver Art Museum to the recently completed light rail system to the school district's experimental approach to student achievement results. Denver is among the nation's most “livable” large cities, with a bustling downtown, historic tree-lined neighborhoods, and the largest public parks system in the U.S.

Located just east of the geographic center of the state of Colorado and 61 miles south of Denver, Colorado Springs sits at 6,035 feetover one mile above sea level. The city is situated near the base of Pike's Peak, one of the most famous mountains in North America. The natural beauty of Colorado Springs' snow-capped peaks, bike trails and open spaces, access to arts and cultural venues, proximity to world-class ski resorts, and over 300 days of sunshine each year make for exciting opportunities outside the classroom for corps members.

NOTE: The hiring process in the state of Colorado is decentralized, which means that Teach For America cannot guarantee or place corps members in a teaching position. Corps members will have to actively work with Teach For America – Colorado in order to apply to jobs they are eligible for and secure a teaching position. A commitment to Colorado's students means that corps members will apply, interview, and be hired into any and all qualifying jobs, regardless of the city location or district location in the Colorado Springs and Denver areas. Corps members must accept the very first job offered, no matter the school type or community, and regardless of other applications they've submitted or interviews they've scheduled.
