Teach For America Placement Schools
Where Corps Members Teach
Corps members in Chicago teach in Chicago Public Schools and in northwest Indiana schools (in Gary and Hammond, cities that are 25 miles from downtown Chicago). They teach students of every age, from pre-K through twelfth grade, in a variety of subjects, including bilingual education and special education. They work in both public charter schools—which serve roughly 10% of Chicago Public School students—and in traditional public schools. Collectively, corps members impact 50,000 low-income students every day. Nearly 80% of corps members teach at a school with at least one other corps member or alumnus.
Get to Know Rauner College Prep
Eric Thomas (Baltimore, ’99) founded Rauner College Prep five years ago. With a faculty comprised of more than 80% Teach For America alumni and corps members, the school led 97 seniors to graduate in 2010, all of whom went on to four-year colleges. Rauner is dedicated to scholarship, discipline, and honor as they prepare their scholars for success in college and beyond. Rauner is one of many pockets of excellence in Chicago that is changing people’s perceptions of what is possible in urban education today.
