Where Corps Members Teach
With 230 corps members teaching in 60 schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district, Teach For America reaches nearly 15,000 students each day in Charlotte. Our corps members are clustered—at least two per school—at schools across Charlotte, with a high concentration of corps members in schools to the West and East of Charlotte. In several schools, we have as many as 10 to 15 corps members in a single school.
Get to Know Phillip O. Berry High School
Phillip O. Berry is a magnet high school in Charlotte that opened in 2003. When the school opened, only 40% of students were proficient on end-of-grade exams; by 2009-10, end-of-grade proficiency increased to 88%. For example, in the 2009-10 school year, 97% of Vivi Schultz’s (Charlotte ’09) tenth graders passed the writing exam, ranking third in the district for tenth grade writing and outperforming the district’s most affluent high schools. In the 2010-11 school year, James McQuilkin (Charlotte Corps ‘09) has made strides in his Spanish class, and last summer, James took a dozen students from his class on a service – learning trip to the Dominican Republic.
